Community Volunteering
Mesilla Valley Casa
Applicants must complete a written application, criminal background and CPS checks, and a complete social history interview where the applicant's own childhood experience is examined. This interview is not for staff to judge what a person has been through, rather, it is a time for the applicant to share with staff the events that have shaped who the applicant is today.
Applicants then participate in Pre-service Training which consists of one evening session/orientation where we discuss the role and responsibility of CASA advocates; two full Saturday sessions where we discuss all aspects of child welfare, including the contributing factors to child abuse and neglect (poverty, mental health, substance abuse, lack of parenting skills, etc.). Then, all applicants attend a swearing-in ceremony before the Children's Court Judge, where applicants take an Oath of Service to uphold the confidentiality of the cases. After new advocates are sworn in, they observe court hearings, and attend a luncheon with current volunteers.

Medical Volunteering

Alzheimer’s Association-New Mexico Chapter
Our center is open Mon-Thurs from 9am-4pm.  Volunteering on site is available during those hours. We are located at 3201 S. Main Suite C. We are always in need of volunteers.

We are always looking for people to train to help teach our community based education classes. These range in topics, from those that cover the basics of the disease to specifics about communication and behavior. We offer a 7-wk, 1 hr per week, evidenced based training for caregivers that emphasizes self-care. We have this program available in Spanish and tailored for the tribes. We also work with law enforcement to understand dementia quickly and act accordingly.

We are also looking for support group leaders in the area. The timing of a group and meeting place are driven by our support group leader volunteers.

We also leverage volunteers to run our annual Walk to End Alzheimer's event here in Las Cruces, as well as on our fundraising committees.

The classes are ongoing.

This year's Walk to End Alzheimer's is on October 7th at Young Park in Las Cruces. Volunteers can just commit to help out at our event, or they can choose to serve on our fundraising committee that meets once a month for a year.

All of the opportunities are located in Las Cruces. However, as this office serves the entire Southwest Region of New Mexico. We try to implement programming in the following counties: Otero, Don Ana, Sierra, Hidalgo, Catron, Grant, and Luna Counties.

We want as many volunteers as possible to help with our program delivery. Ideally, we would want volunteers to commit to offering to serve over a period of time. If a student could commit to a year or more of teaching classes on and off, we would love that. This also applies to support group leadership. On the fundraising side, again, we want as many volunteers as possible to help us with supporting our services and programs.

There is required training involved with our support group leadership as well as with our classes. They must also pass a background check. Anyone who wants to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's, Family Caregiver Conference, or Longest Day planning committees can do so.

Turning Point of Las Cruces
We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available.  Since you are pre-med students I assume you are more interested in the medical capacity of our operation.  We have a sonographer in the center three days a week and you are welcome to do rotations with them.  We also have training opportunities to become peer counselors for clients seeking education and information, among other opportunities we can discuss as students come in to speak with us about volunteering.

Volunteer opportunities are available to everyone.  You will get a better idea of Turning Point if we give a tour and presentation.

BCOM first year students do rotations through our center and the feedback has been very positive.
